This is Ford's own service information for the third generation Expedition, the U324 platform truck built from 2009 through 2017. It runs to 11,460 pages across 121 section PDFs, and it covers the short and long wheelbase bodies together with their Lincoln twins.

Ford kept this platform in production for nine model years and changed the engine partway through, dropping the 5.4L V8 after 2014 and fitting the 3.5L EcoBoost from 2015. This set documents both, which is why it spans the full run rather than stopping in 2014.

Read this before buying so you know exactly what you are getting. One thing is worth being precise about. Everything outside the engine bay applies across all nine years: body, brakes, driveline, suspension, steering, the 6R80 gearbox, climate control, restraints and the electrical system. On engines, the 5.4L V8 and the 3.5L EcoBoost both have their own mechanical, ignition and fuel charging sections. The one place coverage is uneven is the wiring: the engine performance circuits in the diagram set are drawn for the 5.4L, so a 2015 to 2017 truck has full engine repair coverage but its engine management circuits are not among the schematics. Every other circuit in the book applies to the whole span.

What you can repair with it

Nine model years on one platform means most of this archive applies whatever year you own. The body, the frame, the brakes, the 6R80 gearbox, the transfer case, both four wheel drive system sections, the 9.75 inch rear axle, the suspension including the Vehicle Dynamic Suspension load levelling setup, the steering, the climate control and the restraints are all common across the run. The first page you open is as relevant to a 2016 truck as to a 2009 one.

Engine work splits by year and both halves are here in full. Trucks up to 2014 have the 5.4L V8, and this archive carries two mechanical sections for it, the standard and the three valve, plus its ignition and its fuel charging and controls. Trucks from 2015 have the 3.5L EcoBoost, and it gets its own mechanical section, its own ignition, its own fuel charging system and a dedicated turbocharger section. Engine overhaul procedures and firing order charts sit alongside both.

The diagnostic material is the part that earns its keep. There are 4,703 references to Ford pinpoint tests and 1,086 distinct diagnostic trouble codes indexed with their charts. A pinpoint test names the connector to probe, the reading to expect and which branch to follow from each result, so you work a decision tree instead of a list of guesses. Symptom charts, reference values and diagnostic methods have sections of their own, and there is a separate APIM hardware test routine for checking the entertainment module before replacing it.

The electrical coverage is unusually complete for a truck of this age: fifteen sections in all. Beyond the system wiring diagrams there are connector end views, component harness location views, connector repair procedures, ground distribution, fuse and relay information, a harness overview, diagram symbols and component testing. If you are chasing a fault back to a terminal, the connector end views alone are worth the download.

Body and interior work is covered section by section: closures, front end panels, body repairs, the bumper system, full frame and body mounting, glass and mechanisms, the roof opening panel, seats, and interior and exterior trim. The smaller systems people actually get stuck on are here too, including the wiper and washer system, the horn, the clock, the rear view mirror, cruise control, parking aid and the remote convenience transmitter.

One honest note on scope. The engine performance circuits inside the wiring diagram set are drawn for the 5.4L. If you have a 2015 to 2017 truck and you need the engine management wiring specifically, that is the one thing this archive will not give you. Everything else in the electrical set, and all of the 3.5L EcoBoost repair coverage, applies.

Manual language and format

English throughout. The download is a ZIP archive holding 121 PDFs arranged in twelve folders that follow Ford's own grouping: engine, engine performance, transmissions, driveline and axles, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, HVAC, restraints, body and cab, and general information. You extract it once and open whichever section you need.

Every section is text based and fully searchable, so a part number, a torque figure or a trouble code takes you straight to the page. The illustrations are Ford's own and carry the note "Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO." There are 997 numbered figures across the set.

This archive is also cleaner than most. Some of our sets have conversion damage in the specification tables where trademark and degree symbols were mangled. This one has none: all 1,641 trademark symbols and 4,564 degree symbols render correctly.

There is no software to set up and no licence to enter. The sections open in whatever PDF reader you already have, whether that is on a workshop machine, a laptop in the driveway or a phone under the bonnet.

Questions about this manual

Does it really cover 2015, 2016 and 2017?
Yes. The 3.5L EcoBoost that Ford fitted from 2015 has its own mechanical, ignition, fuel charging and turbocharger sections in this archive, and the rest of the truck carried over unchanged from the earlier years. The one gap is the engine management wiring for those years, which is described above.

Which engine does my truck have?
5.4L V8 up to and including 2014, 3.5L EcoBoost twin turbo V6 from 2015. Both are covered, so you do not need to know before you buy.

Does it cover the Expedition EL?
Yes. The long wheelbase EL is named throughout, and the Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L are covered on the same platform.

Are wiring diagrams included?
